A Spatial Portfolio Across Five Dimensions

Circulation is the skeleton.
The envelope is musical cadence.

Space conceived as an unfolding architectural promenade—where tectonic form wraps human movement like counterpoint in music, traversing from microscopic furniture joinery to territorial urban flux and doctoral design epistemology.

The Kyō Tensile Bench & Joint System

A study in material porosity and tensile equilibrium. Japanese red cedar segments are slotted using a non-standard 15-degree compound miter, locked by an articulated stainless-steel pin joint and tension rods derived from Piano’s high-tech structural expressivism.

Rather than hiding the structural load path inside a solid timber core, the bench dissolves the block into rhythmic slats that modulate light and ventilation, transforming structural resistance into an audible visual rhythm.

MATTER.02

The Cantilevered Hinoki Work-Surface

An investigation into structural poise and intentional void. A single solid hinoki slab cantilevers 1.8 meters into open air from an off-axis cast basalt counterweight, balanced by a vertical 316 stainless-steel tension tie.

The leading edge is chamfered with a sharp Libeskind-inspired negative cut, tapering down to a 6mm razor profile that makes the heavy timber appears weightless and hover above the floor plane.

MATERIALITY Kiso Hinoki Cypress, Cast Ultra-High-Performance Basalt Concrete

The Acoustic Sanctuary of Filtered Daylight

Interior spaces designed not as finished boxes, but as acoustic instruments. The ceiling and wall linings consist of articulated timber fins that undulate in response to human circulation paths below, mimicking musical resonance chambers.

Natural daylight entering through high skylights is diffused through Kuma-inspired angled cedar louvers, preventing glare while washing the circulation stairs in changing amber temperatures across the day.

SPATIAL TYPOLOGY Acoustic Reading Nave & Circulation Gallery
LIGHT TRANSMITTANCE 42% diffuse luminous penetration (3200K daylight equivalent)

ENVELOPE.02

The Chiaroscuro In-Between Room (Ma)

An exploration of Japanese *Ma* (the void / interval between things). Rather than dividing interior rooms with rigid drywall partitions, this domestic retreat uses multi-layered sliding screens of textured cast glass, woven washi, and charred sugi wood (*shou sugi ban*).

A continuous raking diagonal skylight—cut in the manner of Libeskind—punctures the ceiling, casting moving slivers of daylight that mark the passage of hours across the blackened timber.

The Kirari Helix Civic Pavilion

A civic institution where human circulation forms the structural core. A continuous pedestrian promenade spirals from the civic plaza upward through a double-curved glulam atrium, dissolving traditional floor plate divisions into a continuous landscape.

The building skin responds parametrically: solid diagonal cedar louvers shelter the west facade against thermal solar gain, while crystalline structural glass curtains open the north atrium toward public parkland.

FORM.02

The Strata Monolith & Terraced Library

Carved directly into a granite cliffside, this archival institute combines heavy subterranean thermal mass with Renzo Piano-engineered lightweight glass-and-timber tensile canopies.

Deep vertical incisions channel natural daylight three levels into underground reading vaults, creating an emotional sequence of compression and release along the stone descent.

Urban design viewed across the fourth dimension: time, tidal influx, and seasonal migration. Rather than imposing rigid, static zoning grids onto a dynamic riparian delta, the master plan organizes territorial porosity through fluid vector topographies.

Linear urban finger-parks filter stormwater runoff through tiered bioswales while functioning as uninterrupted shaded pedestrian avenues linking the upland civic core directly to the maritime edge.

The Porous Micro-District Spine

Stitching high-density transit hubs to delicate historic street fabrics. The intervention uses aerodynamic urban canyon modeling to funnel cool nocturnal maritime breezes deep into overheated civic courtyards.

Building footprints dissolve at ground level into continuous shaded colonnades inspired by Piano's permeable ground planes, eliminating vehicular conflict.

CLIMATIC TARGET 2.8°C average reduction in ambient urban heat island index

The Hall of Memories

PhD-Level Design Method Assertions & Epistemic Reframing

Here, the physical coordinates of timber, steel, and concrete dissolve into the underlying cognitive architectures that generated them. These are not general design tips or corporate post-mortems; they are rigorous theoretical assertions expanding upon Design Thinking, published as crystallized memory codices.

The Non-Euclidean Inversion:
Transcending the Double Diamond

The Flaw of Cartesian Linearity: Standard Design Thinking models (e.g. Stanford d.school / Design Council Double Diamond) presuppose a linear temporal progression: Divergence → Convergence → Problem Definition → Divergence → Convergence → Solution. This mechanical sequencing fails in high-dimensional spatial and sociotechnical systems.

The Theoretical Assertion: Architectural cognition does not diverge and then converge in serial sequence. It operates upon a continuous topological manifold. Divergence at the macro-urban scale (4D) simultaneously forces immediate micro-tectonic convergence at the joint (1D). The process is an iterative deformation of a single unified geometric field, where boundary constraints and creative hypothesis exist in continuous feedback.

Material Resistance as an Epistemic Instrument

The Delusion of Parametric Omnipotence: Digital parametric modeling (BIM, Grasshopper, computational geometry) frequently treats matter as inert, frictionless clay to be extruded arbitrarily along Bezier splines.

The Theoretical Assertion: Building upon Kuma’s philosophy of particulate dissolution and Piano’s structural tectonic honesty, genuine design intelligence arises only when the algorithm collides with the empirical grain, shear resistance, and anisotropic limits of the material. Material failure is not a fabrication obstacle; it is an epistemological boundary that reveals the true spatial geometry of the problem.

The Polyphonic Envelope:
Circulation as Acoustic Resonance

Beyond Visual Functionalism: Modernism reduced architectural experience to static visual composition or sterile circulation efficiency.

The Theoretical Assertion: Walking through an architectural envelope operates precisely like listening to polyphony in music. Just as the brain synthesizes discrete acoustic frequencies across time into a single perceived emotional state called melody, the body synthesizes sequential thresholds of light, compression, acoustic reverberation, and spatial release into a spatial state called place.
